The Rose Ensemble Welcomes Capella Romana
Twelfth Night Festival
Tuesday January 9
Under the direction of Dr. Alexander Lingas, foremost scholar of Eastern Orthodox Church music, Cappella Romana (Portland, Oregon) brings to life music that meets a deep human need, not only to belong and to have a shared creative experience, but to feel the full range of emotional and spiritual effect as expressed through music. In the glorious sanctuary of the Basilica of Saint Mary, the ineffable mystery of the human voice will resound in this program of medieval Byzantine chant, including ancient melodies for St. Basil from the rite of the Great Church of Hagia Sophia (in modern-day Istanbul), and verses of the biblical canticles (odes) of 8th-century Palestinian morning prayer. Works by choral-music superstars Ivan Moody and Sir John Tavener will also be featured in this commemoration of the Christian East’s Twelfth Night celebrations.
