The Basilica Mental Health Film Festival 2019
The Basilica of Saint Mary will screen four films in February that explore a variety of mental health issues through storytelling and acute accuracy. The Film Festival is presented by The Basilica’s Mental Health Ministry that works to provide education, advocacy, and awareness for mental health issues in our community.
The films selected this year depict a variety of mental health concerns including, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Partum Depression, Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (Concussions). The Aviator and Concussion are biopics that examine the lives of the individuals featured. The documentary, When the Bough Breaks, reveals the lives of several women with Post-Partum Depression. Away from Her is a film based on a 44-year marriage affected by Alzheimer’s Disease.
Janet Grove, the Mental Health Ministry coordinator at The Basilica said, “We are proud to continue the film festival this year with films that accurately explore mental health issues that many people struggle with in their lives.” Mental health professionals will lead a discussion following each film.

Why a film festival? Writer Christina Warren stated in a 2010 article:
"With the glitz and glamor of Hollywood and blockbuster movies, it's easy to overlook the very real and acutely transformative effect that film and motion pictures have had on the world. Beyond just transporting viewers into new worlds and fantasies, film has the power — perhaps beyond that of any other medium — to shed light on an issue, telling a story and chronicling history.”
